Art On Silk Accessories

Collections of beautiful unique wearable hand painted silk scarves in a myriad of colours are just one of the accessories Paula makes. Long scarves, square scarves, snood scarves, long infinity loop scarves, ties/neckties, painted notebook covers, and brooches.

A good selection of my work can always be found in Lancashire Makers, Botanic Road, Churchtown Southport, including a range of greetings cards that I produce from my paintings.

Everything is individually hand painted onto sumptuous silk, which is then lovingly made into an item. Colour and Creativity play a big part in each and every piece, so everything is unique

Before I created Art On Silk Accessories, I worked as a designer dressmaker, making brides and bridesmaids dresses. My hobby was art and I used to play with watercolour paints and pastels at my local art club, never producing anything I was truly happy with.

Then one day I visited an exhibition about Batik painting. I had painted on silk before, but the batik method just resonated with me and in finding out more I discovered Shibori a form of tie-dye. The shibori method requires lots of dye to pass through several layers of silk resulting in some truly beautiful patterns, allowing me to play with colour.

Silk Painting – Painting on Silk is a ‘direct’ method as it is not easy to remove dye or gutta once it is applied. I decide what I am going to do and how I am going to do it before I put any gutta or colour onto the silk. In this way I can work confidently and purposefully to complete my task before the dye dries.

Shibori is the transfer of dye through layers of fabric by folding, pleating, twisting and then tying or wrapping to create unique one-off designs.

Batik is a different method of painting on silk because selected areas of the cloth are blocked out by wax. the parts covered in wax, resist the dye and remain the original colour. the process of waxing and dyeing is repeated, allowing new colours to be added, creating more elaborate designs. After the final dyeing the wax is removed and the cloth can be used.
